Eric the Great - Spruce Meadows
July 6, 2008
Calgary, AB --- Eric Lamaze entered the Spruce Meadows International Ring looking to defend his 2007 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup title. He rode his stallion Hickstead clear through the first two rounds of competition. Canadian Olympic teammate Jill Henselwood joined Lamaze in the jump-off with the only other double clear.
Henselwood had the fastest second round time and benefited from jumping off last. Lamaze and Hickstead finished the jump-off clear much to the relief of both horse and rider. “He had a rail earlier this week. It doesn’t happen often but he still feels that rail. He jumped that first fence two feet over,” said Lamaze.
Henselwood followed her Olympic teammate into the ring. For Henselwood the jump-off did not go as planned, she had an early rail and settled for second place.
It was Lamaze’s day, winning not only the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup but also the $50,000 CN Precision Series bonus. Lamaze will now rest his mount until the Olympics. “I expect to medal. I am in a great place and I have a great horse. I am not feeling the pressure because I want to win,” explained Lamaze of his Olympic expectations.
The Spruce Meadows International Ring wrapped up with the $75,000 TD Cup. The speed competition had 36 entries make their way over the expansive course which included the Devil’s Dyke, table top and bank. Faults were turned into time for this race against the clock.
It took an aggressive competitor to overtake this course designed by Werner Deeg (GER) and Leslie Howard (USA) fit the bill. Riding her gelding Lennox Lewis, Howard finished nearly three seconds faster than her closest opponent. “All I had to do was think the distance and he was right there with me. He is a quick horse across the ground,” commented Howard after her win.
