Consistency The Key for Keean White in the $100,000 Canadian Show Jumping Championship

Presented by Greenhawk

November 8, 2008

Toronto, ON --- Canadian Show Jumping crowned a new Champion in Keean White, following three intense rounds of competition over the past 24 hours at the Horse Show at Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. This is White’s first Canadian Championship title, and he beat two Olympic silver medallist to achieve it.

White, 25, of Rockwood, Ontario, rode three carefully controlled rounds over the two phases of the $100,000 Canadian Show Jumping Championships presented by Greenhawk, in hopes that his slow and steady approach would outlast those quicker, but perhaps not so careful. At the end of the day White’s strategy paid off leaving him atop the leader board and heading to the bank with a cheque for the winners share: $22,500.00.

Sitting in fourth place following last night’s initial leg of the Championships, White entered the competition knowing he had to leave the rails in the cups if he had any hope of ending up on top. White’s horse Celena Z rose to the occasion, and, when leader Erynn Ballard knocked down three jumps in the final round, White claimed the top spot.

This multi-phase, multi-day format is not the norm in show jumping, but White insists that for his horse, Celena Z, consistency is key.

“My horse Celena Z is very, very careful, and very powerful, but she is young and sometimes we have trouble making the time allowed. Over these three rounds the quality of my horse was able to outlast the horses that are a bit faster and quicker. I had a time fault in each round today but her jump is so good that it makes up for it.” Explained White.

Olympic Team silver medalist Jill Henselwood was in the running through all three rounds, but had a jump down and one single time fault in the third round, to finish in fourth place overall. Her teammate and defending Canadian Champion Ian Millar stunned the crowd last night when he and his horse, Redefin, parted company at the very first fence. Millar decided to save his horse for tonight’s $100,000 Kubota Cup National Final, and did not jump in the last two rounds of the Championships.

The Royal Horse Show continues through November 16th and will award over $795,000 in total prize money. For schedule and ticket information, please visit www.royalfair.org
